HOW TO MAKE YOUR LOVE STRONG AND LAST WHILE MARRIED WITH MS
Every marriage comes with challenges, but when multiple sclerosis enters the picture, couples like all of us face different kinds of tests. MS affects our energy levels, mobility, emotions, and daily routines but it doesn't let it weaken your love. Many couples are navigating life with MS and trying to balance their marriages. Sometimes trying to come up with ways to stay close can be an added responsibility. But I’m giving you some ways to keep your marriage strong while living with MS.
Commit to daily connection
Love isn’t sustained by grand gestures alone it grows through small, consistent acts daily. A conversation over morning coffee, holding hands, flirty texts during the day or enjoying pillow talk discussing the day can all reinforce your bond. With MS we know that energy comes and go, it’s these little check-ins that reconfirm your bond.
Communicate openly even about the hard things
MS brings changes that can be hard to talk about like fatigue, pain, or shifts in intimacy. But silence builds distance and communicates a message to your spouse that might not be what you’re saying. The goal isn’t to “fix” everything you face but to make sure no one feels alone and unheard. Transparent conversations can help you face challenges head on rather than letting issues fester.
Redefine your romance
Romance doesn’t disappear, but with MS it does require some creativity. Maybe date nights look different now, but they can still be meaningful. Instead of our usual long evenings out before MS, we still go out but we now incorporate shorter timeframes. We’ve learned to extend grace with permission to pivot. We committed to enjoy every moment we have together whether we are having a date night at home or we go out.
Keep intimacy a priority
Intimacy is more than physical, its emotional, spiritual, and physical connection combined. A simple touch, affirming words, laughing together or even praying together all promotes closeness. MS already feels heavy, but laughter and joy balances the weight. Make time to have fun together.
Our marriages can’t avoid hardships but learning to stand together through it strengthens your marital bond. A love that lasts happens when we choose each other every single day. Being consistent in these daily acts, you won’t just be married but your marriage can thrive.
